Mini heli-bot: BEAMish?

Nicolas Franceschini and som eother Frensh guys came up with an miniature helicopter with some insect like brain. The brain should be about 200 milligrams. Big question here: Is it built using BEAM technologies or at least BEAM principles?

Lets check the descriptions (to be continued).

Hi,
This Franceschini’s work is quite old now. This helicopter can’t really fly autonomously, instead it is fixed by a sort of arm, but it can go up and down.
The purpose of this work is to use a special electronic device similar to a fly eye. Then, navigation of this small helicopter is based on “optical flow”, which stand basically that, the more the movement seen is fast, the more the object is near, and inversely.
So with this very simple principle we can easily avoid obstacle or, even fly…
This system doesn’t use BEAM technology, but somehow it uses BEAM principles as it is “bio-inspired robotic”.
