Mechanism

The BEAM Glossary says:

• A term used when referring to:
  
  • Some technical aspect of a larger process.
    
  • A kinematic chain having at least one fixed link.
    
  • A combination of ridged parts designed and connected together in such a way that when force is applied to one or more of those parts, and sometimes others, are caused move and thereby perform a desired function.
    

NOTE: Although a mechanism is usually only a piece of a larger process or mechanical device, on occasions an entire machine will be referred to as a reference mechanism.
