A simple friction brake mechanism, being used to quickly stop the rotation of a motor after power has been removed
  • A device, mechanism or technique used to "quickly" slow, stop or prevent the rotation of a motor shaft, or the movement of another mechanism or vehicle, typically after power has been removed. This is usually involves applying a force in opposition to the rotation or movement.

Often referred to in the plural (e.g. Brakes, as in "putting on the brakes") due in part to the fact that people generally relate the concept to automobiles which have multiple, but cooperative, brake mechanisms, one for each of its wheels.
