Inverter

Sometimes called a "NOT gate", an inverter is an electronic device used to change the state of a logic signal to the opposite state. If the input of an inverter is held high, then its output will be low. Conversely if its input is pulled low then its output will go high.
Typically, inverters also act as buffers. Accordingly, the symbol for an inverter is derived from that for a buffer.
Compare this to a Schmitt inverter and to a buffer. Inverters are available for BEAM use on any 74*04 or 74*240 IC (where " * " is the chip's family -- AC / ACT / HC / HCT).
