Jonathan Connell was a student of Rodney Brooks, and has done work on mobile robots while at IBM. He markets a series of educational robots and kits through his Johuco Ltd. website. Of particular interest to BEAMers are his Photovore (from photo "light" {Greek} vore "swallow up" {Latin}) and MURAMATOR ( latin for "wall lover") robots. These are Beahior based [[robots that relies on neuron inspired circuits to endue them with interesting following behaviors.

The following robots and articles can be found on the Johuco Ltd. website.

[edit] MURAMATOR

(As seen in Popular Electronics magazine August 1991)

An easy to build robot (available in kit form from Johuco Ltd.) that tries to circle around anything it sees - including other robots! It uses a single infrared proximity detector to sense its environment and several neuron circuits to interpret the data. One level of Muramator's brain makes it veer away from obstacles, while a second level lets it seek out edges. Muramator can even be made to run a tabletop obstacle course!

A tutorial that describes the physiology of neurons and explains how they are connected to generate complex behaviors is included with the kit. Builders can explore how the creature's overall behavior changes when its neural and sensory parameters are altered.

The following related articles can be found on the Johuco Ltd. website.

[edit] The Omni Photovore

(As seen in OMNI magazine October 1988)
