A single integrated circuit (IC) that incorporates most or all of the functions of a central processing unit (CPU). However to construct a functional computing system with microprocessor requires additional ICs to provide memory and peripheral interface capability.
For most hobby level robotics projects, a modern microprocessor would be overkill at best, and probably very cumbersome. If a programmable device is desirable for a particulare horse and rider type project, then using a microcontroller would be a better choice.
